In this age of social media, it seems almost everyone wants to be famous. To have everyone know their name and celebrate them walking down the street. To have their work displayed all over the world. It’s always who or how, but never why? Why would anyone want to be famous? What does someone gain from it? What do they lose?
In a time where success is measured by your follower count, these are questions we shouldn’t ignore because they feel “vapid” or “insensitive”. This is not a story of whether fame is good or bad, but one that asks about its merits and pitfalls. Fame is hell, but it is also a tool. Used properly, it can bring about meaningful change. How It Began...
A video surfaces on YouTube of a man dressed as a rat attacking a bike thief on Florida Central University campus. Witnesses spot him patrolling campus or handing out water bottles. “Rat Man” becomes a local phenomenon. Students form groups to search for him. Police want to give him a certificate of thanks. News outlets all ask the same question: “who is the Rat Man?”
The truth?
A student from another college staged a few videos with some friends for his film class. Nothing more than a meme. All in good fun.
But Then...
Florida Central University sees the return of Rat Man – no longer a meme, but a crazed vigilante attacking n’er-do-well students. Students fear they could be next.
Amateur documentarian Cavanaugh Cann, played by Jerome Bowers, knows this is an impostor. He should – he created the Rat Man. But there’s an opportunity to be had here. He recruits his estranged collaborator and original Rat Man, Derek Lesner, played by Blake Amadeo, to help him make a documentary about this insane story. And they’ll have something no one else will: An exclusive interview with the Rat Man!
But they aren't the only ones after the identity of this new Rat Man, as he has gotten himself tangled up in a conspiracy with a fraternity on campus that's strealing student's medications. Cavanaugh will need to develop his documentary with the fraternity, police, and Rat Man fans all hunting down his subject.
