It’s been five years since Cavanaugh created Rat Man. Although it was a modest success, Cavanaugh regrets not taking it further. With the Rat Man’s return, Cavanaugh sees his chance to finally become the famous documentarian he knows he can be. But to do that, he’ll have to find what really drives him.

The original Rat Man and Cavanaugh’s estranged best friend from college. With the death of his father, Derek is uncertain about what to do with himself. He claims not to share Cavanaugh’s desire for fame, but his desperation for purpose draws him back to being Rat Man in a very different form. 

Led by Jake Walden and Taylor Horan, a group of students who patrol campus to find the Rat Man and shower him in adoration. Although Derek is dismissive – after all, they never found him – Cavanaugh revels in their fandom. But there’s more to these cosplayers than meets the eye.

With a vigilante on the loose, it’s up to these two men to bring him in. Unfortunately, their investigation is going nowhere, and their desperation points them to only one suspect: Derek Lesner.

The oldest and most famous fraternity in FCU. Led by President Lawrence Reynolds, they command honor, dignity, and respect. Most of Rat Man’s victims are Fraternity members, caught taking someone else’s pills or drunken rampaging. As more of their members fall and the walls close in, President Reynolds becomes more desperate to bring down the Rat Man. If things go too far, they can always remember one thing: protect the fraternity at all costs.

An amateur documentarian like Cavanaugh, but with more professional success, much to his chagrin. He started a documentary about Cavanaugh years ago, but never finished due to lack of interest. As the Rat Man story picks up, Hamish seeks to finish his documentary with Cavanaugh’s help, which causes friction between Cavanaugh and Derek over how much help they need.
